With an Eye On First Ever Women’s IPL, BCCI Asks Selectors to Create Player Pool

The BCCI is all set to organize the women’s IPL before the men’s IPL, which will take place in late March and early April this year. Moreover, it is also the first tournament of its kind and the board has asked the selectors to create a pool of women players for the tournament.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, the pool will include both Indian and foreign players. The BCCI has given the go-ahead for the preparation of tenders for the franchise auction and media rights and both are expected to come out soon. The franchise auction will follow the media rights tender, the report further states.

Here, it is to be noted that Women’s IPL (WIPL) is the first such tournament of its kind. The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) – the only notable women’s cricket franchise tournament, does not operate on an auction model.

Since WIPL franchises will select their teams through available talent, a requirement is to have an adequate pool of players to choose from. Earlier, the BCCI used to organize the Women’s T20 Challenge, in which three teams played four matches each. The tournament was played between the IPL league stage and before the start of IPL.

Earlier, News18 CricketNext had reported that the BCCI, which will auction five franchises through a closed tender for the upcoming women’s T20 league starting March 2023, has kept a base price of Rs 400 crore (about $50 million).

The cricket board has arrived at this decision keeping in mind the value of the most expensive franchise sold back in 2007-08 – Mumbai Indians for USD 111.9 million (roughly Rs. 446 crores) at Rs 40/dollar.

The board expects the franchise to be sold for between Rs 1000 to Rs 1500 crore or even more, depending on the interest generated from the auction after the tender document is out. However, no one is yet ready to speak on the record about these expectations.

“The winning franchise will pay ownership fee to the BCCI in equal installments over a period of five years and will continue to be the owner of the property in perpetuity like the men’s IPL,” said experts.

The BCCI has asked existing men’s IPL team owners to participate in the bid, but the tender process is open to any and all investors who meet the cricket board’s minimum eligibility criteria. There is no guarantee that in the case of an existing IPL franchise owner’s bid and a new investor match, any preference will be given to the existing franchise owner.
