Retired Army General joins Bharat Jodo Yatra; BJP rakes up scam link, Congress says ‘maligning brave hearts’

Congress and BJP clashed today over the presence of former Army General Deepak Kapoor in Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJY). Gen (Retd) Kapoor joined Rahul Gandhi at Khanpur Kolian in Haryana. While the BJP raised issues of corruption involving Kapoor, the Congress said that the BJP was defaming the bravehearts. Malviya highlighted that Kapoor was implicated in the Adarsh scam along with other senior army officers.

“Former Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor attended Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra. Kapoor was implicated in the Adarsh scam along with other senior Army officers. The inquiry committee had opined that he should not be allowed any government job to embarrass the armed forces. Can be barred from holding the post or office of the force,” said BJP leader Amit Malviya.

Responding to Malviya’s tweet, Congress Social Media President Supriya Shrinate said, “General Kapoor, a war veteran of the 1971 Indo-Pak war, recipient of PVSM, AVSM, VSM and Sena Medal, among other awards, is our Served the nation for 4 decades from 1967 to 2010. Shame on you for defaming our brave hearts. Pity you and your sorry existence.

Congress party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi resumed from Khanpur Kolian in Kurukshetra district of Haryana on Monday morning. Gandhi, dressed in a white T-shirt, was joined by locals amid the morning fog. The Yatra, which is on its 115th day, will reach Mohra Maulana of Ambala via Shahbad and Saha tonight.

Earlier in December, Rahul Gandhi celebrated Women’s Empowerment Day by walking with women as they marched towards Peepulwada in Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur district. Similarly, on November 19, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, only women accompanied Rahul Gandhi during his yatra. The yatra re-entered Haryana on 6 January after covering Uttar Pradesh over a period of three days. So far, the foot march that started from Kanyakumari on September 7 has covered Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and parts of Maharashtra and Haryana. It will end in Jammu and Kashmir.
