When asked about the injury, skipper Rohit called Bumrah a ‘poor man’ and said he has been ‘working really hard’ in the nets at the NCA.

“The poor guy is working really hard at NCA at the moment. Just when he is back to his full fitness. You know he started bowling and everything. In the last two days, this incident happened, I think where he felt a bit of stiffness in his back,” he told the media ahead of the first ODI vs Sri Lanka.

“It’s nothing big, it’s just harshness and when Bumrah says anything, you have to be careful about it.”

He said that he could not be satisfied with Bumrah as he knew that this fast bowler was injured before T20 World Cup 2022.

That’s what we did. I thought it was important to make the decision that we did. Just to take him out because he was in the process of taking out a workload when we called his name. He was bowling in the nets. Just felt a little tightness in his back,” he said.

“So we had to take him out. We need to be very careful with him. He had a big injury before the World Cup so we need to be careful.

“Team India Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Bumrah, who was set to join the team in Guwahati ahead of the ODI series, will need some more time to build up his bowling flexibility.

This decision has been taken as a precautionary measure,” the BCCI said in a statement.

The BCCI said, ‘The All India Senior Selection Committee has not named anyone as a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah.’

It will be interesting to see if Bumrah recovers to compete for the ODI series against New Zealand starting January 18 and is fielded without playing a single home game.

Bumrah suffered a stress fracture in his lower back after the England tour and was ruled out of last year’s Asia Cup.
