On this day in 1986: ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ aired nationally for the first time

September 8, 1986 marked the arrival of the globally popular show, which attracted audiences from over 130 countries around the world. The Oprah Winfrey Show, on this day, hit American screens for the first time. The show’s successful runtime made Oprah Winfrey a billionaire and one of the most powerful and influential women in the world. It also coined a pop-culture term known as the ‘Oprah Effect’.

Oprah was born to a teenage mother in the countryside of Kosciuszko, Mississippi. An arduous journey led him to Baltimore in 1976, where he hosted a talk show called ‘People Are Talking’. In addition, he also worked as a news anchor in Nashville after completing his degree from Tennessee State University.

Her TV career began when she moved to Chicago to host a series of morning talk shows including AM Chicago. What began as a low-rated morning show became the highest-rated under Oprah’s appearance as an anchor. He even surpassed his biggest competitor, Phil Donahue, in that time slot.

Roger Ebert, a Chicago-based film critic, saw his potential and urged him to sign a syndication deal with King World.

The deal gave rise to the highest-rated talk show in television history, The Oprah Winfrey Show. It went national on this day and appeared on 120 channels, with 10 million people watching the show. The show’s first year grossed $125 million, of which Oprah received $30 million, making her an instant millionaire at age 32. After this, there was no turning back for Oprah.

She soon acquired the rights to the show from ABC and began airing it under her production house Harpo (Oprah Spelling Backwards). The show aired for a total of 25 years before ending in 2011. During its end, The Oprah Winfrey Show was being watched on 212 US stations along with 134 other countries. Soon after the culmination of the show, Oprah started her own network called the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).

Oprah also tried her hand at acting, debuting for Steven Spielberg’s 1985 composition The Color Purple. Oprah was nominated for Academy Awards for her role as Sophia. Under Harpo Productions, Oprah also produced a TV miniseries, The Woman of Brewster Place, in which she also starred.
