Reshuffle in top posts in Pakistan Army; Appointment of new commander of Rawalpindi Corporation

The Pakistan Army on Tuesday announced the appointment of a new commander of the Rawalpindi Corps, which is responsible for the security of the Line of Control. According to an army statement, Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza has been appointed as the Commander of Rawalpindi Corps. It also said that Lt Gen Muhammad Chirag Haider has been posted as Commander Multan Corps, one of the main strike corps of the country.

Similarly, Lt Gen Azhar Abbas has been appointed as Chief of General Staff, while Lt Gen Muhammad Waseem Ashraf has been appointed as Director General Joint Staff Headquarters. Transfers and postings are a routine affair, but are watched closely in Pakistan and around the world due to the military’s major role in international and domestic affairs.
