New Zealand vs Bangladesh, 1st Test, Day 5 Highlights

Abadot, a former volleyball player who became a Test cricketer by winning the fast bowling competition, had only 11 Test wickets at an average of 81 when he came on as Bangladesh’s third seamer in this match.

He scored 1–75 in New Zealand’s first innings total of 328 but came into his own in the second innings, with the wickets of Devon Conway (13), Henry Nicholls (0), Tom Blundell (0) on Tuesday Running in the middle order. and Will Young (69). It left New Zealand 147-5 at the start of the game on Wednesday, only 17 ahead of Bangladesh.

Any stiff resistance by New Zealand likely revolved around veteran batsman Ross Taylor, who was quickly disbanded thanks to Abadot, scoring an unbeaten 37 at the start of the game.

Long right arm, which grabs attention and salutes when he takes a wicket, salutes twice when he dismissed Taylor for 40. He then dismissed Kyle Jamieson to bowl out New Zealand 160-7. Shoreful takes a brilliant diving catch at mid-wicket and completes the second out.

After this Taskin Ahmed helped New Zealand to wrap up the innings. He dismissed the other batsman overnight, all-rounder Rachin Ravindra for 16 runs. Ravindra had edged a ball from Abadot between first slip and the wicketkeeper, but this time keeper Liton Das got the lead.

Taskin bowled Tim Southee (0) and Mehdi Hasan Miraj ended it with the wicket of Trent Boult, who was brilliantly caught at deep mid-wicket in place of Taijul Islam.

“It’s a long story, from volleyball player to Test cricketer,” Abadot said. “But I am a Bangladesh Air Force soldier and I know how to salute.

“Our brothers and our teams have not had any victories in the last 11 years on New Zealand soil. But when we came to New Zealand we set a target. We raised our hands and said, ‘Yes, we have to do it and we can do it on New Zealand soil.’

“New Zealand are Test champions so if we raise our hands and beat New Zealand on New Zealand soil, our next generation will be able to beat them too.”

Abadot credits Bangladesh’s West Indies-born bowling coach Ottis Gibson for his transformation into a fast bowler, who urged him to pitch the ball at the off-stump. It was the key to Bangladesh’s bowling success on a humble pitch at the Bay Oval, where New Zealand’s short length was unsuccessful.

“We were short on all three aspects,” said New Zealand captain Tom Latham. “Bangladesh showed us how to go about things on that wicket. They were able to build partnerships, bowl well from both ends and create pressure and unfortunately we didn’t do that for long.

The second Test starts in Christchurch from Sunday.
