NSO Group, the Israeli firm behind the infamous Pegasus spyware, is looking to shut down its Pegasus unit and sell the entire company, a Bloomberg report has indicated. The report, citing people familiar with the matter, said it is in talks with several investment funds about moves that include refinancing or outright sales. according to the report, NSO Group People familiar with the matter said advisors from Moelis & Co. have been brought in to assist, and lenders are getting advice from attorneys for Wilkie Farr and Gallagher.

Bloomberg sources declined to be identified because the discussions are private at this time. One of the sources told the publication that potential owners include two US funds that have discussed controlling and shutting down Pegasus. NSO declined to comment on Bloomberg’s report, along with representatives for Moelis and Wilkie Farr. Datawire had previously reported on the possible transfer.

NSO Group’s Pegasus software has been in the news for the past few years. Spyware can track user’s mobile phone usage. There have been several reports of abuse of Pegasus by high-profile clients, and allegations of human rights abuses related to the use of Pegasus. The product has, in the past, been used to spy on activists, journalists, politicians, and more.

NSO Group has stated on several occasions that it only sells technology to prevent crime and terrorism to governments and law enforcement agencies, and that the company has terminated contracts with customers abusing its software.
