Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik sought the intervention of the Prime Minister on Sunday Narendra Modi On the Centre’s decision not to lift boiled rice from Odisha in the upcoming Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) of 2021-22.
The Center had informed the state government on August 31 that the Food Corporation of India (FCI) would not accept any surplus rice from Odisha in the 2021-22 KMS.
The Chief Minister said that Odisha is estimated to procure 52 lakh metric tonnes of rice in the next KMS, while the state’s own requirement of rice under all the schemes is around 24 lakh metric tonnes, which indicates that the state has 28 lakh metric tonnes. There will be a surplus of rice. Which will be only MT raw rice.
“This leaves the state with the balance of 24 lakh metric tonnes of boiled rice for clearance by the FCI. The latest decision of the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) has put a question mark on lifting of surplus rice from the state,” Naveen said.
On availability of boiled rice in large quantity, latest Said that Odisha is a predominantly rice consuming state and historically, the rice mill industry of Odisha produces rice in large quantities.
“Hence the state is not in a position to face the situation arising out of a paradigm shift in the surplus rice distribution profile imposed by the DFPD on the state,” the chief minister said.
The non-lifting of huge quantities of surplus rice from the state due to the restrictions imposed by the DFPD is likely to severely affect the paddy procurement operations of the state, Naveen said, adding that the Centre’s decision will affect nearly 10 lakh farmers. will be affected and they will be put in it. Serious crisis especially during the COVID-19 pandemic situation.
The Chief Minister also demanded that the state should be given due time to align itself with the requirements of DFPD.
The state government and the Center had also created a ruckus over the issue of non-lifting of boiled rice from the state in the last 2020-21 KMS as the BJD MPs met the Union Minister for Food and Public Distribution. Piyush Goyal To pick up boiled rice.
In the previous KMS, the state had procured 77.33 lakh metric tonnes of paddy (equivalent to 52.35 metric tonnes of rice) to the state government and MSP of Rs 14,444 crore was transferred to the bank accounts of farmers.
This has not only benefited the farmers, but has also given a boost to the rural economy of the state, especially during the ongoing pandemic. The Chief Minister said that the State Government has made special efforts to increase the procurement operations in the remote areas of the State.
