‘Moment I went to field, took some painkillers, game over’: Sachin Tendulkar recalls his historic double century in ODIs

Sachin Tendulkar is arguably the greatest batsman to ever play the game of cricket. The Master Blaster announced his retirement on November 16, 2013, but he still holds several cricketing records. Tendulkar will always remain an iconic figure in Indian cricket for his illustrious career, in which he scored 100 international centuries, 51 in Tests and 49 in ODIs. The cricketing demi-god has topped the list for most runs, centuries and matches in both ODI and Test formats.

In his 24 year long international career, Tendulkar displayed his determination and adaptability to sustain it at the greatest level. Consequently, in 2010, when many claimed that he should retire, Tendulkar silenced all his critics by becoming the first batsman to score a double century in ODI cricket.

At the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior, the nation rejoiced as the 36-year-old Tendulkar, spread his bat outside the off-stump, and squeezed a ball off the fielder at Charles Langevelt’s bowling to complete his double century.

Recently, Tendulkar revealed that he played sports with painkillers as he was drained and had pain in every part of his body.

“Records are just there. Even in my wildest dreams, I didn’t know if I was ever going to get a double century. In fact, I had a great season till then. I had a lot of aches and pains in my body that morning,” Tendulkar had told ESPN Cricinfo.

“I was actually on the physio table in the hotel room telling the physio that my body is very tired right now, I am tired because every part of my body was hurting and I am tying it in my preparation Was. So I told him that if we win this match, I will ask BCCI to rest me for the third ODI. If we don’t win then obviously I will play. But I hope we win today’s match and finish the series.”

Tendulkar said the game overcame the pain when he entered the field as the rest was history. However, he also claimed that he never thought of scoring a double century in ODIs.

“The moment I went on the field, after taking some painkillers, the game took on itself. Such is the power of any sport. Not for a moment did I think about my injuries and the aches and pains. I was so engrossed; It was a beautiful feeling. What I am trying to say is that even when I scored a century, I never thought of a double hundred. I was just thinking that jo hona hai ho gaya (whatever happens, let it happen). I said [to myself] I will just keep batting- that was the aim,” Tendulkar had said.
