For all the travel junkies out there, here is a good news. In a recent development, Machu Picchu is now the first international destination to receive a carbon neutral certification.

what does this mean? In simple words, the certification was presented to the Historic and Natural Sanctuary of Machu Picchu by the Green Initiative – an organization known for promoting green and eco-friendly tourism. In addition, the Green Initiative placed Machu Picchu as a global reference for sustainability.

Reportedly, according to the certification, it seeks to radically reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of the Inca heartland, with the aim of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 45% in 2030 and reaching neutrality in 2050.

What factors were considered?

One of the world famous destinations, Machu Picchu has achieved this feat by implementing several eco-conscious initiatives. This popular tourist destination has received certification for the establishment of the only organic waste treatment plant in Peru. This was done with the aim of converting waste into natural coal, and for an oil transformation plant that produces biodiesel and glycerin from vegetable oils, discarded from homes and restaurants in the area.

Another way to offset the impact of CO2 emissions would be to buy carbon credits, which encourage bodies to find solutions to reduce their emissions. According to reports, the climate change model of the UN will oversee this mechanism.
