Loan default case: CBI arrests former Assam CM Hiteshwar Saikia’s son Ashok

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday arrested Ashok Saikia, son of former Assam Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia, in a 25-year-old alleged loan default case.

The move was taken after a non-bailable warrant was issued against him for not appearing in court despite summons in connection with an alleged loan default case of around Rs 9 lakh.

The former Assam chief minister’s son, who was questioned by the CBI’s Guwahati team, has been arrested and will be produced before the court on Monday, officials said.

Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Devvrat Saikia said that his younger brother Ashok was taken away in the evening by a team of CBI officials.

“I do not know whether he has been arrested or detained. Actually, I don’t know where he has been taken. This is a very old matter and it has been duly settled. The bank did not inform the court and it was the bank’s fault.

The Congress leader further said that he has no idea why such an old resolved issue is being raised.

“The CBI claimed that they had sent a notice. My mother who lives with Ashok stays at home all the time and she said that we did not get any notice. Our lawyer said that the matter should not have been pursued at all. I don’t know why such an old resolved issue is being blown up.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly also shared with PTI the AScard certificate issued by its in-charge General Manager HN Bora on October 28, 2015, which mentioned that Ashok K Saikia, Director, HPS India Pvt Ltd, had taken advantage of it. was raised. 9,37,701 loan under Bridge Loan Scheme in 1996.

Issuing a statement through his elder brother, Ashok Saikia said that he had taken a loan from the Assam State Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development Bank Limited (ASCARD) in 1996.

Ashok Saikia, a businessman by profession, said: “Later, I repaid the loan as per an ASCARD letter in 2011. The General Manager in-charge of ASCARD, through an official letter dated October 28, 2015, said that there were no dues.”

“The CBI team suddenly came to our house and said that my loan is pending. I have not received any notice from CBI or court.

Ashok Saikia further said that I do not know why the CBI has brought him in a “baseless and fictitious case”.

“Only the CBI or the government will know this,” he said.
