South Africa will host India in a three-Test series starting at Centurion on Sunday. The teams are also scheduled to play three One Day Internationals (ODIs) starting January 19.

The South African board said in a statement that the decision to play behind closed doors has been taken jointly with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

“This decision was taken to avoid any violations that could compromise the tour from a COVID-risk point of view and also maintain a hazard-free bubble environment,” the statement said.
The decision has been made in the best interest of the sport as well as the health and safety of the players and staff, the statement said.

South Africa last week reported a record number of daily Covid-19 infections in a fourth wave that is believed to be largely caused by the Omicron variant.
