At the peak of the pandemic, daily admissions in Goa were between 200 and 230. Of these, about 60 to 80 patients, and sometimes even more, were admitted to the GMC.
The most challenging period was the last two months when many times the hospital ran out of beds and patients could be found throughout the hospital. The situation changed after the super-specialty block was opened for Covid-19 patients.
“I remember the day when we had around 140 patients without beds. Even the examination hall was converted into a ward and everyone helped to render their services,” GMC dean Dr SM Bandekar said at the felicitation ceremony.
Bandekar said that the hospital was able to provide beds on wheelchairs, stretchers and trolleys to the patients within a short span of time and made all necessary arrangements only because the staff members cooperated.
“These are challenging times. While the second wave is not over yet, there are talks about it third wave. And Delta Plus strain has been detected in some parts of the country,” Rane said.
Rane said the GMC kept admitting patients even after occupied all its beds, as it cannot deny admission as it is a state institution.
