1,263 people were discharged, active cases in the district fell to 6,122. Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: 671 new cases of Kovid-19 were registered in the district on Saturday. With 1,263 people recovering, the number of active cases fell to 6,122.
The total number of cured people increased to 2,09,054, taking the recovery rate to 96.2%. With nine deaths recorded on Saturday, the toll crossed the 2,000 mark to 2,003.
With reports of some people in Tamil Nadu being infected with the delta plus version of the virus, the Coimbatore health department sent around 150 nasal swabs for genome sequencing. Dr Senthil Kumar, deputy director of public health, said 125 swabs were sent for sequencing three weeks ago, while 25 were sent on Monday. The department also tested large groups of people in public places, including 100 at Poo Market and 200 at Mettupalayam Potato Market.
The issue of token distribution for vaccination in government schools continued on Saturday and political party members intervened in the process. While corporation commissioner Raja Gopal had issued an order that only corporation employees should distribute tokens, issues of token distribution continued in rural areas.
On Saturday morning, when 400 doses of Covishield were allotted to Ashokapuram Primary School, people queued up from 3 am to collect tokens for vaccination. Token distribution started at around 7.25 am. “The issues started when some DMK members, who were distributing tokens, said that only 350 doses are available for the public, and the rest for frontline workers,” said a resident. AIADMK member panchayat president created ruckus.
As of 7.45 am, even out of 350 tokens, not all had been given to the public. “While they distributed tokens up to the number 270, the next token issued was 320,” said the resident.
DMK members tried to pacify the public by saying that 400 doses were allotted to Ashokapuram panchayat after much negotiation. He promised those who were left a slot during the next camp.
