David Malan said he failed to convert 50 runs into a century on Saturday and warned England that they must learn to convert good starts into big scores if they want to win Tests.
The number three of England started the third day of the second Ashes Test against Australia with one and forged a strong partnership with captain Joe Root.
But it broke after the first session when Root fell for 62 and Malan went on to a quick 80.

It was the second successive Test in which both the men were heading for centuries but then threw away their wickets. Root scored 82 runs in the first Test in Brisbane and Malan.
After England were bowled out for 236 in the first innings of the Adelaide Day-Night match, Malan said, “We talk about taking 20 wickets or what have you, but in Australia you have to score big runs and big hundreds you have to get into Tests.” Have to win matches.”
“In the last match both Ruthie and I were in a position to score hundreds and we didn’t, and we were in the same position here and both times we found us to be less as a batting unit than the Australian batting unit.
“So that’s something we should be doing better this next innings, to make sure we get that big 100 if someone comes in.”

The 34-year-old South African-born Malan has now scored nine Test 50s but has converted only one into a century.
Malan made his debut against South Africa in 2017 and played 14 Tests in 2017 and 2018, but did not play any more until he was recalled against India in August this year.
He said he was “obviously pleased” to score runs in the first two Tests, but “getting 80 runs in two consecutive innings and getting out slowly is very disappointing”.
“We have played only three innings so far, some boys have scored some scores, but once we are in, it is all about scoring big,” he said.
“Marnus (Labuschagne) did it for Australia and Travis Head did it in Brisbane, and that’s where the game slipped a bit and put us under pressure, and that’s what we haven’t done well enough so far.”
Labuschagne scored 103 in Australia’s first innings, while Head scored 152 in Brisbane.
