Officials said a county jail inmate being treated at an Ohio hospital shot dead a security guard, pointed his arms at others and then killed himself in a parking lot.

A shooting at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton took place on Wednesday after a gunman carrying a rifle and a gun killed four people and himself in a medical building on a hospital complex in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was the latest in a series of deadly mass shootings across the country in recent weeks.

Dayton police said inmate Brian Booth, 30, was undergoing treatment when he clashed with Darrell Holderman, 78, and took away his gun.

Holderman worked for a company hired by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office to provide security to inmates admitted to hospitals. Police said he suffered multiple fractures to his skull and injuries to his hands during the clash.

Police said Booth fatally shot Holderman when people were running down a hallway and into the parking lot, pointing guns at him, where he killed himself, then went into hiding.

Officials said Booth was being held in the county jail over a probation violation stemming from a 2015 burglary.
