Aishwarya Rai Bachchan reflects on why she is not given insightful roles like in PS-2.

Aishwarya Rai who recently grabbed headlines with her sensational appearance at Cannes 2203 was last seen in Mani Ratnam’s pan-Indian film Ponniyin Selvan: II. The film which was a 2022 sequel, Ponniyin Selvan: I garnered the actress accolades from across the country for her stellar performance. In a recent interview, Aishwarya Rai revealed why no one offers her a role like PS-2.

Speaking with Film Companion, Aishwarya Rai explained, “PS-II in Bollywood, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan replied,” Well it’s a dumb question I think everyone is asking in general. We’re all creative people, when something turns out so well and feels so right, for the people creatively working on it, as well as for the audience, that’s the reaction it evokes. I think one of the most beautiful and most rewarding moments is when these kinds of questions arise for the actors, the leading ladies…”

Praising Mani Ratnam and his craft, Aishwarya Rai further said, “There’s a reason we salute Mani Ratnam and directors like him who do such creative work, and that’s why working with actors It’s a pleasure for us, and to come up with such results and such films, where we are proud of our work. We feel extremely satisfied and Ponniyin Selvan certainly was extremely satisfying for all of us Is.”

Ponniyin Selvan is based on the novel of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The first part of the magnum opus grossed Rs 500 crore at the worldwide box office, while part two earned around Rs 300 crore. The film is directed by Mani Ratnam and jointly produced by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.

“Having watched both the films now, I feel that Ponniyin Selvan deserved a bit more depth considering the different characters and plot. The two-part series could be explored as a grand web series, something similar to Game of Thrones, or even as a three-part film series, with the characters being fleshed out completely. Allows and lets people choose their favourites. Overall, when Ponniyin Selvan was announced, it appeared to be a great door opener for those who were not aware of the five-part novel. However, the two-part series ends up as a great cinematic experience that fell short on storytelling,” News18’s Shosha’s review for PS 2 read.
