The Supreme Court will hear the review petition filed in the Chhawla gangrape case on Thursday. These petitions have been filed regarding the acquittal of three death row convicts in the 2012 gangrape case of a 19-year-old girl in Chhawla area. Apart from the Delhi government, these petitions have been filed by the father of the deceased girl, Uttarakhand Bachao Andolan and Uttarakhand Lok Manch.

A three-judge bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud will consider the decision to acquit the three convicts. It will also include Justice S Ravindra Bhat and Justice Bellam Trivedi.

The Supreme Court had agreed to hear the matter soon on 8 February. The CJI had assured the Delhi Police that a three-judge bench would be formed under his leadership. Will also consider hearing in open court.

A case was registered in Najafgarh, Delhi. It was said in the complaint that the accused had taken the girl out of Delhi in a car. Ravi Kumar, Rahul and Vinod were made accused in this case.

3. Accused sentenced to death after 2 years of gangrape
In 2014, the trial court found Ravi, Rahul and Vinod guilty and sentenced them to death. In August this year, the High Court had also upheld the death sentence. The court had termed the convicts as ravenous animals roaming the streets.

4. In the Supreme Court, the police also opposed the reduction of the sentence
After the High Court’s decision, the convicts filed an appeal against it in the Supreme Court. The Delhi Police opposed the commutation of the sentence. Said that this crime is not only against the victim, but it is a crime against the society. Delhi Police had said that this is a heinous crime. We are against giving any kind of relief to the culprits. The father of the victim girl had also said that the culprits in the case should be hanged.
