World Saree Day 2021: From Katrina Kaif To Alia Bhatt And Kiara Advani, It’s All About Going The Six Yards Way

When Katrina Kaif posted a picture of herself before her wedding, the first question that came to mind was ‘Who draped that beautiful sari?’. At a time when breaking up with your PJs seems a bit daunting, here you have celebrities flaunting their sexy saree drapes with gusto. On the occasion of World Saree Day that falls on December 21, we take a look at what industry experts have to say about these six yards of glory and what’s hot this saree season.

The drape-preneur as people fondly call her, Dolly Jain has been in the business of wearing sarees for the past 15 years and has designed ensembles for celebrity brides like Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and most recently Katrina Kaif. Calling the saree, a versatile fabric that can be draped in multiple ways, Dolly will soon launch its coffee table book which will include 365 ways to drape a saree and will also add a plus 1 for the leap year. When Katrina was given a Sabyasachi saree to drape Dolly, initially they wanted her to leave the shoulder pallu flowing. However, Dolly suggests that they pleat the shoulder pallu. Highlighting the importance of a good drape, Dolly says, “When the saree was given to me, I felt that since it already has a veil, you cannot handle two garments at the same time. So, what we did was we tied it tightly on his shoulder. Katrina looked gorgeous in that saree when she posed for pictures with her groom Vicky Kaushal.

When it comes to celebrities, experimentation is key. In the year 2021, celebrities including Alia Bhatt, Genelia Deshmukh, Kiara Advani, Vidya Balan, Malavika Mohanan walked six yards for film promotions and events. Be it Alia Bhatt’s traditional pure-zari Kanchipuram sari in two-tone Tiffany green by Madhura Creations or Manish Malhotra’s Malavika Mohanan sari with sexy boysenberry sequins, saris have been celebrated in a variety of styles, colors and fabrics.

Speaking about how much sarees have evolved over time, Dolly says, “Saris are making a huge comeback. If you see 7-8 years ago, not only young girls but women in families also stopped wearing saris and opted for gowns, long kurtas etc. However, with time, everyone understood that investing in a saree is much more practical than any gown. I always encourage brides to invest in handlooms. Saree is a versatile fabric that can be draped in many ways. It is important to understand that if you already have this notion that saree is uncomfortable, you will never feel comfortable in it.”

So, what is the most sought after saree this festive season? Fashion designer Tamannaah Punjabi Kapoor believes, “I think sarees are evergreen and beautiful and can be worn at any age.” Giving a sexy and glamorous avatar to georgette sarees was a Neeta Lulla sari with sequin panels with décolleté and multi straps worn by actor Genelia Deshmukh.

From embroidered sarees to hand painted sarees, there is something for everyone. However, the perception of many people regarding saree draping is that Dolly wants to change something. “People think there is draping… four pins yaha lagaye waha laga and draping done. At least not for me… I care what is gentry, what is body language , whether she is sari or not, what ceremony she is going for. A drape artist should consider all these things before giving a drape idea to the bride.”
