BCCI Women’s T20 league to be officially known as Women’s Premier League

BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday revealed that the board has raised Rs 4669.99 crore in total bids for franchises during the auction process for its maiden Women’s T20 league, which will be officially known as the Women’s Premier League or WPL.

The five successful bidders for the inaugural season of WPL include Adani Sportsline Private Limited (Ahmedabad), IndiaWin. Play Pvt. Ltd. (Mumbai), Royal Challengers Sports Pvt. Ltd. (Bangalore), JSW GMR Cricket Private Limited (Delhi) and Capri Global Holdings Private Limited (Lucknow).

The total amount for the WPL has broken the record of bids received by the BCCI for the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League, which began in 2008.

“Today is a historic day in cricket as the bid for the teams of the inaugural #WPL broke the records of the inaugural Men’s IPL in 2008! Congratulations to the winners as we have raised Rs 4669.99 crore in total bidding,” Shah tweeted on Tuesday.

He added, “This marks the beginning of a revolution in women’s cricket and paves the way for a transformative journey not only for our women cricketers but for the entire sporting fraternity. #WPL will bring much-needed reforms in women’s cricket and create an all-encompassing ecosystem.” mechanism that benefits each and every stakeholder.”

Adani Sportsline made the winning bid of Rs 1289 crore for the Ahmedabad-based team, making it the most expensive of the five teams to be bought in the auction.

IndiaWin Sports spent Rs 912.99 crore for Mumbai, which was the second highest amount paid for a WPL franchise.

Royal Challengers Sports paid Rs 901 crore for the Bengaluru franchise while JSW GMR paid Rs 810 crore to buy the Delhi team.

Capri Global Holding Pvt. Ltd paid Rs 757 crore for the Lucknow franchise.

BCCI had selected ten cities as home base including Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Lucknow, Indore, Bengaluru, Guwahati and Dharamshala.

Participants were allowed to bid for more than one city. However, the bidders will be able to acquire the ownership rights of only one city.
