Kolkata: Hitting out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over allegations of conspiracy against her by the Center, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday said the Trinamool Congress chief has a bad habit of finding conspiracy in everything. .

In a video message, the BJP chief also accused the TMC chief of using his leg injury for political gains. “I congratulate Mamata Banerjee for victory in Bhawanipur. “There is an atmosphere of fear. We are thankful to the people that they gave us so many votes even in a scary environment. This inspires the BJP to continue its fight in Bengal,” he said.

Bhawanipore gave its verdict for Banerjee as she won a landslide victory in the assembly by-election of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against her nearest rival Priyanka Tibrewal by a record margin of over 58,000 votes, thus making Banerjee a member of the state legislative assembly. According to the Election Commission of India, Mamata Banerjee secured 85,263 votes, which is about 71.90 per cent of the total votes polled in the by-elections.

In Banerjee’s main contest, BJP candidate Priyanka Tibrewal got 26,428 votes and CPI(M) candidate Shreejib Biswas got 4,226 votes. The victory was significant for Banerjee, as she has to secure an assembly seat by the first week of November and continue as the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

Notably, Mamata Banerjee was defeated by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram constituency in the assembly elections held earlier this year.

Subsequently, the Bhabanipur assembly seat was vacated by West Bengal Agriculture Minister Shobhanadev Chattopadhyay in May, giving way to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to contest from the Bhabanipur seat to continue in her post.

BJP fielded 41 year old Priyanka Tibrewal Against TMC chief. A lawyer by profession, Tibrewal is the vice-president of the West Bengal unit of the BJP Yuva Morcha. He is also a petitioner in the Calcutta High Court against the post-poll violence in the state. Notably, the High Court has ordered a CBI inquiry into the violence in West Bengal after the assembly elections.

The by-elections for Bhawanipur assembly constituency were held on 30 September.

Trinamool Congress registered a landslide victory in the assembly elections by winning 213 out of 294 seats in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. BJP got 77 seats.
