Waterlogging Raises Concerns: Stagnant Water Could Pose Serious Health Hazards For General Public, Experts Warn

Low-lying areas, which are submerged in water, can become hotbeds of epidemic diseases for the local people, who play in the stagnant water despite repeated warnings.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also tweeted that people should avoid it as it can be fatal.

Dr Om Prakash Jhakar of Indira Gandhi Hospital (Delhi government) told IANS that people who were playing in the water should take it seriously as the situation could turn dire in the coming days.

“Malaria and cholera are common nowadays. Water can also cause skin problems. People should understand the seriousness of the situation,” Jhakar said.

Delhi Home Guards have also been instructed to keep people and children away from the accumulated water.

Dr Suranjit Chatterjee, internal medicine specialist at Apollo Indraprastha Hospital, told IANS that stagnant or frozen water can cause skin rashes, dermatitis and skin infections in people who come in immediate contact with it.

“If the water enters the body, the person may get leptospirosis, which is a fatal disease,” the official said.

He said that due to stagnant water, there is a possibility of health hazards like cholera, diarrhea and leptospirosis.

Roads are flooded in Shantivan, Red Fort, ITO, ISBT and adjoining areas, which have turned into entertainment venues with families coming to take photographs.

Doctors have also said that people should avoid going into water as it is not safe for them.
