Vijay Diwas 2021: History, significance of the day when India defeated Pakistan in the 1971 war

India celebrates Vijay Diwas on 16 December to commemorate its victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. Why is Vijay Diwas celebrated in India?

After fighting for 13 days, India won the war against Pakistan on December 16, 1971. During the struggle for independence in East Pakistan, the war began on 3 December 1971 and ended 13 days later with an unconditional surrender on 16 December. Pakistani Army.

On this day, Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, the then Major-General in the Pakistani Army, surrendered to the combined forces of the Indian Army and the Mukti Bahini of Bangladesh. Niazi, who surrendered along with 93,000 Pakistani troops, was the commander of the Pakistan Eastern Command, and also signed the ‘Instrument of Surrender’ at the Ramana Race Course in Dhaka (now the capital of Bangladesh).

The ‘Instrument of Surrender’ was signed and accepted by Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Arora, the then General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of India’s Eastern Command.

After World War II, it was also the largest military surrender ever and Niazi’s iconic picture of him signing the ‘Instrument of Surrender’ tells the story of the bravery of the mighty Indian Army.

In this war, Pakistan suffered the most, with around 8,000 killed and 25,000 wounded, while India lost 3000 soldiers and 12,000 were wounded.

The 1971 war put Bangladesh on the world map, which until then was East Pakistan. Bangladesh celebrates this day as ‘Bijoy Dibos’ to mark the country’s formal independence from Pakistan.
