Parents in the national capital heaved a sigh of relief with the government’s announcement that the Covid vaccination for children in the age group of 12-14 years would start from Wednesday and said that the vaccine for children was long-awaited. The nationwide immunization drive was launched on January 16 last year, with health workers (HCWs) getting the vaccine. Vaccination of Frontline Workers (FLWs) in the first phase started from February 2 last year.

The next phase of COVID-19 vaccination began from March 1 for people above 60 years of age and 45 years and above with specified co-morbid conditions. The country started vaccination for all people over the age of 45 from April 1, 2021.

Following this, the government decided to expand its immunization campaign by allowing everyone above the age of 18 to be vaccinated from May 1 last year. The next phase of COVID-19 vaccination began on January 3 for adolescents in the age group of 15-18 years. “My son’s school has also sent a mail asking us to register for the vaccine on the COWIN portal. I hope it is a smooth experience and we also want a vaccine to be available soon for children below the age of 12 years,” said Neetu Jha.

According to official sources, around 7.11 crore children in the new age group will be vaccinated. Sources said Biologicals E Ltd has supplied 5 crore doses of Corbevax to the Center and the vaccine has been distributed to the states.
