‘Think about history books’: US on India’s report of Russian concessional oil offer

The White House has said that Russia’s offer of concessional crude oil by India will not be considered a violation of US sanctions. “Our message to any country is to follow the restrictions that we have imposed and recommended,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters at her daily news conference on Tuesday.

Asked about a report on the possibility that India might accept the Russian offer of concessional crude, Saki said, “I don’t think it would be in violation of that (sanctions).” “But also think about where you stand when you want to stand. The history books are written in this time. Support for the Russian leadership is support for an invasion that is clearly having devastating effects,” Said Saki.

India has not supported the Russian invasion of Ukraine. New Delhi has consistently asked all stakeholders to resolve differences through dialogue. However, it has not participated in all UN resolutions against Russia.

Officials in the Biden administration have shown an understanding of India’s position and told lawmakers that New Delhi is a major dependency on Russian military supplies for its national security. However, Indian-American Congressman Dr Ami Bera expressed dismay at reports that India is looking at buying Russian oil at a heavily discounted rate.

“If the reports are true and India makes this decision to buy Russian oil at a discounted price, New Delhi would love to be with Vladimir Putin at a crucial moment in history when countries around the world unite in support of and against the Ukrainian people. . Deadly invasion of Russia,” he said.

“As the world’s largest democracy and leader of the Quad, India has a responsibility to ensure that its actions do not directly or indirectly support Putin and his aggression,” Bera said in a statement.
