A total of 2,33,035 girl students in 1000 schools of Uttar Pradesh are receiving this training through sports coaches.

Basic Education Department, Uttar Pradesh has announced self-defense training for schoolgirls in 1,000 schools across the state on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2023, March 8. A total of 2,33,035 girl students are receiving this training through sports coaches.

The official handle of the department carried a tweet in Hindi which roughly translates to, “Self-defense training being imparted to girl students in 1,000 schools in the state by sports coaches. And through this training has been given to 2,33,035 girl students.

Last year, the Yogi Adityanath government decided to introduce self-defense training in upper primary and composite schools as part of Phase 4 of Mission Shakti.

Under Mission Shakti, self-defense training is being imparted to girls to ensure their safety and well-being and their physical and mental self-reliance. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the launch of Mission Shakti in October 2020 for the safety of the women of the state.

As per the plan, the compulsory self-defense training began in December 2022 and was to end in February 2023. Sports, Physical Education, Art and Music, Physical Education Instructors as well as Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) sports teachers imparted training to all the girls studying in various schools during the stipulated period. The special training was conducted under the supervision of the headmaster of the school.

Apart from the school children, a teacher from the school was also involved during the training process. In the first week of the program (during the warm-up activities), a mock drill was conducted with the school children to sensitize them about the safety measures, laws and helpline numbers.

A booklet was also published by Women and Child Protection Organization Headquarters, Lucknow. It was based on important laws related to crimes against women and children. Some important points from the booklet were also read out and discussed in detail with the children.

Self-defense instructions aim at helping girls develop their psychological, intellectual and physical abilities to defend themselves in difficult situations. More than 10,000 health and physical education instructors and 10,904 trainers and teachers are employed in 746 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas in the state.
