UP: Police chased with sickle at Gorakhnath temple, father says ‘mentally unstable’

On Sunday night, a man attacked the policemen posted at Gorakhnath temple, where UP CM Yogi Adityanath is the chief priest. He chased the police with a sickle before being forcibly overpowered and arrested.

Ahmed Murtaza Abbasi, the man who attacked the police in UP’s Gorakhnath temple, is undergoing treatment.

A man attacked the Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constabulary personnel posted at Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur on Sunday night. Two constables are reported to have been injured in the incident.

According to sources, Abbasi passed chemical engineering from IIT-Mumbai in 2015 and hails from the Civil Lines area of ​​Gorakhpur. The UP Anti-Terrorism Squad started investigation into the matter on Monday. In a video, which is being shared widely, Abbasi can be seen chasing the police with a sickle, while policemen and passersby hurl bricks at him to defend himself.

Abbasi’s father Mohammad Munir said that his mental condition is not good since 2017. Even their marriage fell apart due to their mental state and tendency to be alone. His father told that Ahmed Murtaza Abbasi is undergoing treatment in many cities including Ahmedabad.

Abbasi has recently returned from Mumbai. ADG Gorakhpur Akhil Kumar said that Abbasi is being questioned as to why he came to the Gorakhnath temple and what was his connection with Mumbai. Four teams of police have been deployed for investigation.

Mohd Munir has been a legal advisor in several finance companies and his brother, a doctor, owns Abbasi Hospital in Gorakhpur.
