UP elections: BJP candidate who gave body massage to voters wins, SP candidate who monitors EVMs with binoculars loses

The BJP MLA, who was seen doing sit-ups and massaging a voter during the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election campaign, has retained his seat, official results showed. According to the Election Commission website, Bhupesh Choubey of Robertsganj constituency in Sonbhadra district secured 84,496 (or 40.29 per cent) of the total votes, defeating his nearest rival, Avinash Kushwaha of the Samajwadi Party (SP) by over 5,600 votes.

According to the Election Commission, Kushwaha got 78,875 (or 37.61 per cent) votes out of the total 2.09 lakh votes that were counted in this seat. A total of 10 candidates were in the fray for the assembly election from Robertsganj, including Choubey, who won the constituency election in 2017 to become an MLA for the first time.

The 47-year-old BJP MLA had hit the headlines during the election campaign after he was seen holding his ears from the stage of an election rally to apologize to the voters of his constituency. A few days later, during a door-to-door campaign, he was seen massaging an elderly voter who was suffering from pain in his legs and lower back. Choubey had met him and applied ointment on his body.

While the videos of both the incidents went viral on television and social media, he also became the object of mockery, even as SP chief Akhilesh Yadav took a dig at BJP in his rallies over Choubey’s antics. The BJP retained power in Uttar Pradesh by securing a majority out of 403 seats and is once again set to form the government with Yogi Adityanath.

Extra cautious SP candidate lost voting

A Samajwadi Party candidate, who used to be extra vigilant before counting of votes and kept an eye on the local election office through binoculars, lost the Uttar Pradesh assembly election, official results showed. According to the Election Commission (EC) website, Yogesh Verma of SP contested from Hastinapur constituency in Meerut district of western UP where he lost to Dinesh Khatik of BJP by a margin of 7,312 votes.

Election Commission data shows that Verma got 1 lakh (43.55 per cent) of the total votes, while Khatik got 1.07 lakh (46.72 per cent) votes. In the wake of exit polls and allegations of EVM tampering at some places in Uttar Pradesh on March 9, Verma was seen in an open gypsy and using binoculars to keep an eye on the strong room from afar.

While there was no report of EVM tampering from Hastinapur during or before the counting of votes, Verma came into the limelight after videos of his extra cautious act surfaced in the news and on social media. Another popular contestant from the Hastinapur seat was Congress’ Archana Gautam, a model-actor-turned-politician who appeared nowhere in the electoral battle for this seat.

Archana got 1,519 (0.66 per cent) votes, while BSP’s Sanjeev Kumar got 14,240 votes, ranking third out of a total of eight candidates in the seat. The BJP retained power in Uttar Pradesh after the 2022 assembly elections, winning most of the state’s 403 seats and is once again set to continue with the Yogi Adityanath-led government.
