UP Congress blasts as Priyanka Gandhi stays away after election defeat, leaders adopt ‘sand in head’ attitude

It has been almost a month since the Congress suffered its worst defeat in the assembly elections and the party is now torn apart by party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra being away.

The party won just two of the 403 seats and just 2.3 per cent of the vote. About 387 candidates of the party forfeited their deposits. In 10 seats, party candidates got less votes than NOTA.

The resentment against the team handling the elections is increasing day by day and party leaders are either being expelled or exiting at an alarming pace.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is not even ready to listen to the party workers. She hasn’t come to Lucknow after the election results have been announced and her congregation is happily taking action against what she says. I am a member of AICC but despite being against the rules, he was expelled by his team. If they think they will save the Congress by driving out the dissidents, then they are wrong.”

He said that ever since Priyanka Gandhi was appointed general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, around 9,000 leaders and workers of the party have either left or been thrown out.

“It seems that the Gandhi family is not ready to address the issues and problems. It doesn’t matter to them that the party is almost over. The Congress President neither responds to our letters nor does she agree to meet us.

Another former Congress MP, who spoke to IANS on the condition of anonymity, said, “Priyanka Gandhi Vadra should have called a meeting of candidates and senior leaders to discuss the reasons for the defeat. We are just two from the Lok Sabha elections. Years are away and if this headstrong attitude continues, Congress will go to the dustbin of history.”

Surprisingly, Priyanka, who based her election campaign on ‘ladki hoon, lade sakti hoon’, did not even look back to the party in the post-poll situation.

The state unit is also in limbo after Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Kumar Lallu was asked to resign last month.

“It is a free-for-all situation here. No party leader goes to the party office and no political activity is taking place after the election.”
