UP, Ballia: Ravidas Temple Set Ablaze By Miscreants, Video Goes Viral, 5 Booked

A case has been registered against five people for allegedly setting ablaze the Ravidas temple at a village in Chitbadgaon area here, police said on Tuesday. Deputy SP Ashok Mishra told that the incident took place on Monday night in Mirchi Khurd village when a person in an inebriated condition set the temple on fire.

Police said an FIR has been registered against Rajesh Tiwari, Aditya, Ravindra, Janki and Munna Tiwari under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on the complaint of villagers. The idol of Saint Ravidas inside the temple was damaged in the fire, he said, adding that a detailed investigation was underway in the matter.

Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Prashant Nayak said that the statue and the hut were set on fire in the night. A video also surfaced on social media in which policemen are seen trying to douse the fire in the hut. A new statue of Sant Ravidas is being installed and a police team has been deployed in the village.
