The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is scheduled to shoot down the satellite Megha-Tropiques-1 (MT1) on Tuesday between 4:30-7:30 pm. After staying in space for 10 years, as soon as the satellite comes in the orbit of the earth, it will be destroyed in the sky itself.

Explain that this satellite was launched by ISRO in association with the French Space Agency CNES on October 12, 2011 in Low Orbit to study tropical weather and climate. Although it was planned to be sent to space for 3 years, but it was giving important data about climate till 2021, so its deadline was extended.

The power to destroy India’s satellite in space
India has the power to destroy any satellite in space. Apart from India only America, Russia and China can do this. Please tell that India started working on it in the year 2012.

Why MT1 is being destroyed
ISRO had a commitment to keep it in space for 10 years with the United Nations Space Debris Agency (UNIADC). Under the guideline of UNIADC, any satellite has to be destroyed by removing it from the orbit after its life is over. So that there is no loss of life due to its fall. The alternative to not destroying the satellite is to leave it in its orbit so that it slowly decays on its own.

this mission is very challenging
MT1 weighs around 1000kg. Larger satellites and rockets are generally expected to survive aero-thermal fragmentation upon re-entry into the atmosphere. But MT1 does not have such a feature to prevent it from disintegrating when it enters the atmosphere. It is being destroyed so that no accident happens. So, this mission is very challenging.

It is not easy to target the satellite
Targeting satellites in low orbit earth is not an easy task. Because the velocity in this lower orbit is 27 thousand kilometers per hour. Because of this, the satellite in ‘low orbit’ also moves fast. In this sense also, killing a ‘low orbit’ satellite in space in just three minutes is considered to be the biggest achievement for India. Because only America, Russia and China have done this before.
