A patient 93 from Ayan Afzal Khan powered UAE to one of the best results in their cricket history as they beat West Indies by 82 runs in the plate semi-final at the Queens Park Oval here on Saturday (IST).

The United Arab Emirates got off to a quick start when Shiv Shankar struck three early strikes to put the scramble at 26/4. It was at this time that Ayan came to the crease and his 91-ball 93 turned the game upside down. While wickets kept falling in the beginning, his 103-run partnership with Shival Bawa (51) for the seventh wicket ensured that the team had something to defend.

Ayan was the last man to fall in a first innings effort of 224/9, a goal that proved too much for West Indies, who lost by 82 runs.

Jash Giannani (3/21) took an early lead, with West Indies quickly finding themselves 32/4. And unlike the UAE, they had no Ayan to save the day, as Dhruv Parashar (4/30) picked up where Gyanani left off.

West Indies’ most resistance came from Nathan Edward (51 not out) as he and number 11 Isai Thorne (17) put on a 70-run stand for the final wicket before Ayan sealed the win. The UAE will now take on the winner of the game Ireland vs Zimbabwe in the plate final, while West Indies will take on the 11th-ranked losers.

Brief Scores: UAE 224/9 in 50 overs (Aayan Afzal Khan 93, Shivaal Bawa 51; Shiva Sankar 3/31) beat West Indies 142 in 39.4 overs (Nathan Edward 51 not out; Jash Giyanani 3/21, Dhruv Parashar 4/30) by 82 runs.
