Udaipur beheading: Rajasthan government rewarded five policemen, know why

JAIPUR: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday rewarded five policemen for quickly arresting the killers of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal. Two arrested accused Riyaz Akhtari and Ghaus Mohammad brutally murdered 45-year-old Lal inside their shop in Dhan Mandi police station area on Tuesday.

“For premature promotion of five policemen named Tejpal, Narendra, Shaukat, Vikas and Gautam, who made quick arrests of the accused involved in the Udaipur incident,” the Chief Minister announced.

Chief Minister Gehlot said on Wednesday that the Rajasthan Police has registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against two people who brutally murdered Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur a day ago.

“The Udaipur massacre was meant to spread terror. It has also come to the fore that the killers have contacts abroad as well.” He said the case would be probed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Rajasthan Police would extend full cooperation to the probe agency.

Gehlot made the remarks after chairing a high-level meeting in which he reviewed the situation in Udaipur. Tailor Kanhaiya Lal was murdered on Tuesday by two men, who posted videos online saying they were taking revenge for insults to Islam. The incident led to sporadic incidents of violence in Udaipur and curfew was imposed in seven police station areas of the city.

In a video clip, Akhtari announced that he had “beheaded” the man and threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his knife would be found by him as well. Indirectly, the attackers also referred to Nupur Sharma, a BJP leader suspended from the party for a remark on Prophet Mohammad.

Lal’s last rites were performed on Wednesday in the presence of a large number of people.
