Types of Depression You Didn’t Know About

Depression is one of the most misunderstood mental health conditions. Despite a lot of information available, people including those who suffer from the condition do not know exactly what it is.

This mental health condition, which is also a symptom in itself, is generally considered to be one of two types – clinical depression and regular depression, which do not actually require any medical attention. But this approach is flawed for several reasons. In this article, we have listed down five types of depression that you may not have known about.

seasonal affective disorder

Seasonal affective disorder is a major depressive condition that follows a seasonal pattern. Typically, the disorder begins during the fall and winter. A part of the brain called the hypothalamus is at play and according to researchers, the disorder is caused by a lack of sunlight. Thus, one of the treatments involves phototherapy.

atypical depression

Abnormal depression is similar to any other depressive condition and is quite common. Unusual depression goes away and the person’s mood brightens in response to a positive event, good news, or lifestyle change. However, it may happen again as soon as possible.

smiling depression

Smile depression is a disorder where a person is living with depression from inside but looks happy and content from outside. The symptoms of smiling depression can be almost non-existent when the person suffering from it engages in their public life. Smiling depression has an increased risk of suicide because they have more energy to act on their thoughts than others.

bipolar disorder

Another form of depression is bipolar disorder characterized by extreme mood swings, including emotional highs (hypomania) and lows (depression). Bipolar disorder is divided into three levels – bipolar I, bipolar II and cyclothymic – based on the frequency of depressive or hypomanic episodes.

psychotic depression

One of the worst forms of depression is psychotic depression where a person loses touch with reality. They start hearing or seeing things and have episodes of delusions in a recurring way.
