Twitter has apparently shut down its internal communication system Slack and employees have posted on the anonymous workplace chat app Blind that the company has stopped paying their Slack bills.

The move took employees by surprise, and no one turned up for the entire day on Friday as they were suddenly unable to communicate, reports Platformr.

Employees have also lost access to Jira, a tracking software that allows engineers to ship code and monitor progress on new features.

While some employees communicated over email, some decided to take just one day off and others took two days off.

Jira access was later restored but the slack down for “routine maintenance” was not.

One Slack employee was quoted as saying, “There’s no such thing as routine maintenance.”

A spokesperson for Slack confirmed that the company has not deactivated Twitter workspaces or user accounts. Slack rarely shuts down services for maintenance.

“We haven’t paid our Slack bill. Now everyone is working hard. Penny Wise, Pound Foolish,” wrote one Twitter employee.

Another called the disappearance of Slack “the proverbial last straw.” Twitter did not immediately comment on the report.

Meanwhile, the platform remained down for a few minutes for many users on Friday and around 55 per cent users complained of problems accessing the platform from mobile.

The outage was brief and services were restored shortly after.
