The son of legendary actor and producer-director Prithviraj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor was a prolific artist. He was Kapoor by nature. Shashi was a heartthrob in the sense that his dimples, crooked dogs, looks and dialogue delivery drew women across the country to his doorstep to join hands in marriage, but Shashi’s heart belonged to Jennifer Kendall.
Shashi wanted to keep his marital relationship with Jennifer private. It was a rare opportunity to tell about his love for her. Shashi and Jennifer tied the knot in 1958. They have two boys, Karan and Kunal, as well as a daughter, Sanjana. Shashi had said in an interview before his death in 2017 that he knew he wanted to marry Jennifer the very moment he met her.
He had said in an interview to News Tak that at that time he was only 18 years old when he first met Jennifer. She said, “I wanted to marry him immediately. My parents said in shock, ‘My god, 18 is a little short.’ So I replied, ‘Okay, okay, I’ll wait.’ Two years later, he said, ‘Do you still want to?’ I replied, ‘Yes,’ and he said, ‘Okay.'”
Shashi passed away on 4 December 2017 after a prolonged illness. But, till his death, he only took care of Jennifer. Their pairing and friendship were very sweet. Jennifer said goodbye to this world for the last time in 1984. In such a situation, Shashi became quite alone but he did not marry again. Whenever he was questioned, he refused, claiming that “no one like him can ever be discovered again.”
His son Kunal told a news outlet in 2012 that it had been 28 years since his mother’s death, but his father had never really recovered. He died at the age of 50. They had a strong connection. According to her, every relationship has its challenges, but their bond was unique and exceptionally strong.
Shashi was not only a serious person but also a serious artist. He will always be remembered by every cinematographer. His grandson Jahan Kapoor will now make his film debut.
