Punjab’s new Sikh Dalit CM Charanjit Singh Channi has a long history of controversies. On Sunday, he was announced to be the new CM of Punjab, after which old controversies and popular stories related to him also came to the fore. - Posting by Toss: When Charanjit Channi was the Minister of Technical Education, he was admitted to the Polytechnic Institute 3 years ago. Two applicants of lecturer wanted posting at the same place. At that time Channi tossed and whose tail came, he got posting at the place of his choice.
- Message to IAS officer: In the year 2018, Channi was accused of sending objectionable messages to a woman IAS officer. Captain Amarinder Singh asked Channi to apologize. The Captain had said that after this the matter was over. However, in May this year, the matter suddenly arose again. Punjab Women’s Commission chairperson Manisha Gulati warned that if no action was taken against Channi, she would go on a hunger strike.
- Made a road breaking green belt: When Channi became a minister in 2018, on the advice of an astrologer, he changed the map of the government house. For success in politics, Channi shifted the direction of entry in Chandigarh towards east. For this, he broke the green belt and got the road built. However, the Chandigarh administration again removed the road and made it a green belt.
- Elephant ride: For success in politics, Channi rode an elephant in his house in Kharar. Then it came to light that some astrologer told him that if he does this then he can become the CM of Punjab.
- Patchwork statement: Channi was also the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly for some time. At that time there was an Akali-BJP government. Sukhbir Badal was the Deputy CM. Sukhbir asked Channi in the assembly to tell him one development work of Captain Sarkar between 2002 and 2007. On this Channi said that Captain Sahib has got patchwork done on the roads of entire Punjab.
- Couldn’t clear the PhD entrance: Channi had given entrance for PhD in Indian National Congress in 2017. At that time it was alleged that in order to benefit Channi, Panjab University relaxed the rules for SC/ST candidates. However, they could not pass the entrance.
