Tamil star Ilayathilakam Prabhu completes 40 years in cinema

Veteran actor Prabhu Ganesan, popularly known as Prabhu, has completed 40 years in the Tamil film industry. Prabhu made his debut in the Tamil film industry in 1982 with the film Sangli. Released on 14 April 1982, the film starred Prabhu alongside his father and legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan.

In a career spanning over four decades, Prabhu has acted in over 200 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada languages. He has acted in many films in both hero and supporting roles. He has worked with Tamil superstars like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.

Prabhu’s debut film Sangli was directed by CV Rajendran and produced by SD Gunasekaran. The action drama was a remake of the 1976 Hindi film Kalicharan.

Although Prabhu made his acting debut in 1982, he started working in the industry as an executive producer with his uncle VC Shanmugam. His uncle is said to be his mentor and he insisted that Prabhu should learn the art of filmmaking.

In 1991, she acted in a Tamil romantic drama titled Chinna Thambi. It was directed by P. Vasu. The lead role was played by Khushboo. The music of the film was composed by Ilaiyaraaja. The film was a cult hit so the filmmakers remade it in Kannada as Ramachari (1991), in Telugu as Chanti (1992) and in Hindi as Anari (1993). Prabhu received the Best Actor Award for this film by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

In 1998, he acted in Mansukkul Mathappu. The film was directed by Robert Rajsekar. The film’s cast had Prabhu, Saranya and Lissie in lead roles and Sarath Babu in a supporting role. The film was a remake of the 1986 Malayalam film Thalavattam. Prabhu won the Cinema Express Award for Best Actor in Tamil for the film.

In 2004, he acted in a comedy film Vasool Raja MBBS directed by Saran. The film was a remake of the 2003 film Munna Bhai MBBS. The film starred Kamal Haasan in lead roles, while Prabhu, Sneha, Prakash Raj, Nagesh, Malavika and Karuna starred in supporting roles.

In 2005, she shared her screen with Rajinikanth in the film Chandramukhi. The film was a comedy horror film written and directed by P Vasu. The film was a remake of Vasu’s Kannada film Aapthamitra, itself a remake of the Malayalam film Manichitrathaju. The film was produced by Prabhu and his brother under their home production banner Shivaji Productions. The film was a huge hit and won 5 Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, 4 Film Fan Association Awards and 2 Filmfare Awards South that year.

In 2016, Prabhu starred in his 200th film Meen Kuzhambam Mana Paanayam, produced by his nephew Dushyant Rajkumar. The film was a fantasy comedy written and directed by Amudheshwar. Along with Prabhu, Kalidas Jayaram, Aashna Javeri and Pooja Kumar played important roles.
