Draupadi Murmu, the first Indian President to receive the award, on Monday received the Grand Order of the Yellow Star Key Chain, Suriname’s highest civilian honour.
The award was presented to Murmu by the President of the Republic of Suriname, Chandrikaprasad Santokhi.
After receiving the award, Murmu said that this honor is not only important for him but also for the Indian people.
“I am deeply honored to receive Suriname’s highest honour, the “Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star”. This recognition means a lot not only to me but also to the 1.4 billion people of India whom I represent. India said in a tweet.

He presented the award to “successive generations” of the Indian-Surinamese community.
He further added, “I also dedicate this honor to the coming generations of the Indian-Surinamese community, who have played a vital role in enriching the fraternal relations between our two countries.”
President Draupadi Murmu arrived in Paramaribo, Suriname on 4 June for the first leg of her state visit to Serbia and Suriname.
Suriname President Chandrikaprasad Santokhi accorded full state honors to him on his arrival at the Johann Adolf Pengal International Airport, according to an official press release from Rashtrapati Bhavan.
President Murmu began today’s activities by visiting the Presidential Palace in Paramaribo to meet President Santokhi, his counterpart.
At Rashtrapati Bhavan in Paramaribo, he was warmly received by his counterpart Santokhi.
The President appreciated the warmth and cordiality of President Santokhi during all the meetings, he was happy to note that Hindi is widely spoken in Suriname, which helped him remember India.
The four key Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) that India and Suriname signed on Monday include health, agriculture and capacity building.
The agreements were signed after delegation-level talks between Murmu and Santokhi. Delegation level talks between the two sides were led by President Murmu.
