Stock market sets new record: Sensex crosses 53,500, Nifty above 16,000

New Delhi: BSE Sensex and Nifty hit record highs today. The Sensex closed at 53,500 with a gain of over 558 points. Nifty also rose 115 points to cross 16,000 for the first time. Nifty had reached 15,000 on February 5 this year. The Sensex had gained 363.79 points or 0.69 per cent in the previous session.

The market capitalization of listed companies on the BSE touched a record high of Rs 238.95 lakh crore on Tuesday amid gains in early trade on Tuesday. Investors’ wealth of Rs. 3.45 lakh 729 crore from Friday’s closing price. Titan gained nearly four per cent in the day’s trade. Besides, Sun Pharma, Bharti Airtel, HDFC, IndusInd Bank and Asian Paints were also among the major gainers.

Rupee rises 4 paise against US dollar

The Indian rupee on Tuesday rose by four paise to 74.30 against the US dollar amid a cautious trend of traders. The Indian rupee opened at 74.36 against the dollar at the interbank forex market, then rebounded to 74.30, showing an increase of four paise over the previous close.

The rupee had closed at 74.34 against the US dollar on Monday. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures were down 0.04 per cent at USD 72.86 per barrel.
