These fishermen were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy with 10 mechanized boats in three batches from December 18 to 20 as they were fishing several nautical miles beyond the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) in Sri Lankan waters. It may be recalled that 12 of them were released by a Lankan court earlier this month. While nine of them returned home, three others were to remain in quarantine as they tested positive for Covid-19.
The 56 fishermen who were released on Tuesday are expected to return to Tamil Nadu by air before the end of this week.
NJ Bose, who is the president of the Federation of All Mechanized Fishermen’s Associations in Rameswaram, thanked the Tamil Nadu government for its efforts towards the release of the fishermen. He also urged the Chief Minister and the Center to expedite efforts to release 10 trawlers used by 68 fishermen, which were confiscated by the Sri Lankan Navy at the time of their arrest.
