England fell only to a total of 180. The credit for the English team’s horrific collapse goes to right-arm seamer Allan Donald, who took an astonishing five-wicket haul.

England’s tour of South Africa in 1994 was written in golden words in the annals of South African cricket history. The first Test of the three-match series saw the Proteas script history as they won a Test match in England after a span of 29 years. Playing at the Lord’s Stadium in London, South Africa won the Test by a huge margin of 356 runs – courtesy of visiting captain Kapler Wessels.

The Proteas opened the historic Test by batting first as the coin went in favor of Wessels. The captain took the lead in the first innings as he smashed a blistering 105 runs in 217 balls including 15 fours. South Africa scored 357 runs on the scoreboard on the basis of the captain’s exploits.

After a score of 357, England were reduced to a total of 180. The credit for the horrific collapse of the England team goes to right-arm pacer Allan Donald, who took a scintillating five-wicket haul. None of the batsmen could even score 40 runs for England and thus they found themselves trailing by 167 runs.

The spectators again dominated the third innings of the game. South Africa declared their innings for 278 runs. Gary Kirsten scored 44 runs for the Proteas. He was suitably supported by Peter Kirsten who played a crucial innings of 42 runs.

Darren Gough took four wickets for England and led the attack. However, overall, the bowling unit of the hosts failed to pose any threat to the visitors. In the last innings of the game, England were again let down by the batting line-up as the entire team was torn apart like a pack of cards.

The hosts reduced themselves to five from 99 in one of the most memorable wins against South Africa. Craig Matthews and Brene McMillan were the highest wicket-takers for the visitors in the previous innings as they took three wickets each.
