In the last 17 months, there have been about 50 lakh deaths due to corona in India. This estimate has been expressed in the study of an American institution. The organization has collected data from January 2020 to June 2021. According to him, the situation created by Corona is the biggest human tragedy after India’s independence and partition. In this study, the delta variant of the corona has been described as a major threat to the world, which can bring a new wave of infection.

Washington’s Center for Global Development based this study on serological studies, house hold surveys, official data from civic bodies at the state level and international assessments. In this report released on Tuesday, three estimates of deaths in India have been given. The number of deaths in all is said to be many times higher than the government data (4.18 lakh).

three estimates of deaths

  1. Even in the estimate of the lowest number of deaths, this number is 34 lakh. It has been prepared on the basis of registration taken from 7 states.
  2. In the second calculation, the international estimate of the Age Specific Infection Fatality Rate (IFR) has been applied. According to this, the number of deaths is around 40 lakh.
  3. The third estimate is based on the Consumer Pyramid Household Survey. In this 49 lakh deaths have been said.

The report, authored by Abhishek Anand, Justin Sandefer and Arvind Subramaniam, says it is important to understand and link to data-based estimates. It will not be counted for now but for the future as well. Arvind Subramaniam is the former Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India. It has also been said in the report that it can also be wrong to tell the number of deaths due to corona on the basis of survey and estimates.

The first wave was more dangerous than I thought
The report said that during the first wave from March 2020 to February 2021, India did not anticipate the tragedy properly. This failure caused a terrible second wave. According to this, the first wave was more deadly than was believed. About two million people would have died in the first wave itself.

This new study on deaths has come at a time when the delta variant found for the first time in India has shaken many western countries. Most of the cases of corona in America are being found in the delta variant only. Many of these are also without vaccination. Here there has been an increase of 66% in new cases in the last 7 days.

So far two waves of corona have come in India
So far two waves of corona have come in India. The second wave proved to be more lethal than the first. During this, India received the highest number of new cases in a single day in the world. The peak of the first wave occurred on 16 September 2020. A total of 97,860 cases came in the country on that day.

According to government data, till this day more than 83 thousand patients had lost their lives. The second wave peaked on 6 May 2021. On that day 4,14,280 new cases came across the country. Till now 2.34 lakh deaths had taken place across the country. Right now this number is 4.18 lakh.

Fear of third wave persists
The second wave of corona is going on in the country right now. With its weakening, the central government has expressed the threat of a third wave. A report by SBI Research has claimed that the third wave will arrive in August. It says that the peak of the third wave will come in September. This would be twice or 1.7 times the peak of the second wave.
