Sita Aur Geeta fame actor Mushtaq Merchant dies at the age of 67 after prolonged illness

Mushtaq Merchant worked in films like Sita Aur Geeta, Sagar, Fifty Fifty and Sholay.

Mushtaq made his Bollywood debut in 1972 with Jawaani Deewani and went on to act in several big hits including Sholay.

Veteran actor and comedian Mushtaq Merchant passed away on 27 December in Mumbai. He was 67 years old. He breathed his last at Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai. He was suffering from diabetes and was undergoing treatment at the hospital. He was living in Bandra area of ​​Mumbai.

Mushtaq Merchant’s close friend Hanif Zaveri told the media that the cause of Mushtaq’s death was his high blood pressure and diabetes.

According to Zaveri, Mustaq was suffering from diabetes for the last 10-12 years and was admitted to the hospital on December 27 after his health deteriorated. He died a few hours after being admitted to the hospital.

He made his Bollywood debut with Jawaani Deewani in 1972. He also acted in films like Sita Aur Geeta, Sagar, Fifty Fifty and Sholay. He had a long career spanning over two decades and acted in over 80 films.

Mushtaq was supposed to play a role in Sholay which starred Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra. But her role in the film did not make it to the big screen, as scenes featuring her were removed in the final edit due to the length of the film. IMDB said on its website that Mushtaq played two roles in Sholay – a train driver and a biker.

According to reports, Mushtaq won the Best Actor Award in the All India Inter College Competition held in Mumbai. He has also won the Best Writer and Director awards for three consecutive years in college competitions. Mushtaq also wrote scripts for a few films like Pyaar Ka Saaya, Laad Saab, Sapne Saajan Ke and Gang.

According to reports, he had quit his film career 16 years ago and engaged himself in religious activities.
