Covid-19 hits Maharashtra assembly as two ministers, 53 others test positive

Mumbai: The winter session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has been hit by Covid-19, with at least 55 people including two ministers and an MLA testing positive for the virus.

Apart from the two ministers, house staff, police personnel and journalists covering the proceedings have tested positive for Covid-19.

Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad, Tribal Development Minister KC Padvi and BJP MLA Sameer Meghe are among those infected with the virus.

The winter session ended on Tuesday. In view of the increase in Kovid-19 cases, it was reduced to five days.

On Tuesday, Maharashtra’s School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad tweeted that she tested positive for coronavirus. The minister, who had also contracted the infection last year, had attended the winter session of the assembly.

Congress said, “I came to know today that I tested positive for COVID-19 after I felt symptoms for the first time yesterday evening. My symptoms are relatively mild. I am fine and have isolated myself. Last few days I request those who meet me to be careful.” The leader tweeted.

Since last one week, Maharashtra is recording a gradual increase in the cases of COVID-19. Maharashtra reported 1,426 Covid cases on Monday, of which Mumbai contributed 788 cases. The active cases in the city have increased by over 120 per cent in the last 10 days.
