Shane Warne took a total of four wickets in a single innings against England.

Shane Warne is arguably the best spinner to have played this game. From a young man with the ability to rip the ball to a skilful tactician to dodge the batsmen, Warne has left an indelible mark on the game. After a great start against India in Sydney Cricket Ground, the leggie took 700 wickets in Tests and on this day during the 2005 Ashes series, he trapped England’s Marcus Trescothick to take his 600th Test wicket.

Australia were taking on England in the third Test in Manchester and Warne stood for 599 wickets. England batted first, but lost the wicket of Andrew Strauss early. However, Trescothick found a capable ally in the form of Captain Michael Vaughan and together they attacked Australia. Marcus Trescothick scored a century and added 137 runs in just 22.3 overs with Vaughan.

Warne also faced some punishment in his first few overs but then scored at the angle of the wicket. In his 5th over, the left-hander tried to get down to sweep the pitched ball outside the off-stump. However, the ball bounced a touch, kissed his glove and went about to pad his and then fell to a sharp chance slugger behind his bat and wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist. With this wicket, Warne became the first bowler in the history of Test cricket to break the 600-wicket milestone.

He took three more wickets in the innings, but England were bundled out for 444, mainly due to captain Michael Vaughan’s 215-ball 160.

ICC Tweet:

Warne remains the second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, behind Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan who finished his career with 800 Test wickets.
