“He was working day and night till April. On May 1, he started feeling tired and had taken some medicines and a break from work to rest. After a few days, he started having trouble breathing and we reached the clinic again. They asked him to get the Covid test and CT scan done,” Roopa said.

After getting her tested, Krishna’s family was immediately asked to look for an ICU bed. Roopa said Krishna’s report indicated that the infection was serious. After a day’s struggle the family could make an arrangement oxygen cylinder for Krishna. However, by evening, Krishna had already used up the contents of the cylinder and his oxygen saturation had dropped from 85 per cent to 55.

Bed was arranged in a private hospital with great difficulty whitefield. However, by then Krishna’s condition was critical. On 9 May, Roopa was told that her husband was deteriorating and was taken to the hospital. In the evening, he was informed that he was no more.

After the death of her breadwinner, Roopa had to spend all her savings to pay the hospital bills. The family also tested positive and were advised to remain in isolation.

Now, he is looking for a job to pay his rent, which is due for the last two months. “I have studied till 10th standard. I am ready to take up any work. I have to give good education to my children,” said Roopa.

Like myself, many people have suffered serious losses during the pandemic, Roopa said. “If the government can help families like mine, it will be really helpful. Any compensation, even if not monetary… at least a job to survive… would be great to do something for Asha,” Roopa said.
