The BJP on Saturday named Bhabesh Kalita and Sharda Devi as its Assam and Manipur unit presidents, respectively. Party general secretary Arun Singh said in a statement that the appointments have been made by BJP national president JP Nadda and have come into force with immediate effect.
Kalita, who is the sitting MLA in the Assam Assembly, will replace Ranjit Kumar Das, who became a minister in the newly formed government in the state headed by Himanta Biswa Sarma. In the recently held assembly elections in Assam, BJP had won.
The party has also changed its state unit chief for Manipur, where elections are due next year. Sharda Devi will replace Saikhom Tikendra Singh, who succumbed to COVID-19 last month.
