The Supreme Court on Friday said that the nominated members of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) cannot vote in the election of the Mayor.

Following the decision that nominated members of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) cannot vote in the mayoral election, the Aam Aadmi Party on Friday said it is a victory for it and has increased people’s faith in the apex court.

Addressing a press conference, AAP leader Durgesh Pathak said, ‘We are thankful to the Supreme Court. The order of the apex court on the Delhi Mayor election is a slap on the face of the BJP. The direction to sit in the opposition and the mayor will be yours as people have voted for the Aam Aadmi Party.”

The Supreme Court on Friday said that the nominated members of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) cannot vote in the election of the Mayor.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal termed the order a victory for democracy and claimed that it proved how the Lieutenant Governor and the BJP were passing “illegal and unconstitutional orders”.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala directed that the election of the mayor of Delhi would be held in the first MCD meeting and the mayor, once elected, would preside over the election of the deputy mayor.

The apex court’s order came on a plea by Shaili Oberoi, the mayoral candidate of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), seeking early elections.

The top court had on February 8 sought response of the lieutenant governor’s (LG) office, MCD’s temporary presiding officer Satya Sharma and others on Oberoi’s plea.
