Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the country’s biggest canal project in UP today. This Saryu canal project built in Balrampur has been completed at a cost of 10 thousand crores. This will benefit more than 25 lakh farmers of 9 districts of Purvanchal. CM Yogi Adityanath and Governor Anandiben Patel were also present in the launch program along with the PM.
The Saryu canal project took more than 4 decades to complete. Its work started from Bahraich district in 1978 during the tenure of Indira Gandhi. Then the budget for this was kept at Rs 79 crore. In 1982, 9 districts including Balrampur were connected to this project. Governments changed, but till 2017 only 52 per cent of the work was done. The remaining 48 percent of the work was completed in the four and a half years of the Yogi government.

Such is the Saryu canal project
- A network of 6 thousand 590 km canals was laid.
- All these canals have been connected to the villages.
- It connects five rivers of 9 districts of Purvanchal.
- Ghaghara to Saryu, Saryu to Rapti, Rapti to Banganga and Banganga to Rohini river were connected.
- Water from all the five rivers will be released into the canal for irrigation.
- It was declared a national project in 2012.
- The first end of the canal is on the Saryu barrage of Bahraich built on Ghaghra and Saryu river.
There are about 3 lakh 5 thousand farmers in Balrampur. Out of these, about 1 lakh 50 thousand farmers will get direct benefit under this project after water comes in the canals.

A 47 km long Sarju Yok canal of 360 cusec capacity was taken out from the Girjapuri barrage on the Ghaghra river in Bahraich. With this water will be brought up to the Sarju canal barrage built on the Saryu river.

- This project will irrigate 14 lakh hectares of land.
- More than 25 lakh farmers of 6,200 villages in 9 districts will get the benefit.
- The length of the project is 318 km, while it has linkages in 6 thousand 590 km.
- Interlinking of rivers will save them from disasters like floods.
Irrigation facility will be available for 14 lakh hectares of agricultural land in 9 districts under Saryu Canal National Project.
Rapti Yok canal 21 km long has been made from 34 km left of Saryu main canal. Water will be provided to it from the upstream of Rapti barrage constructed on Rapti river.
The project consists of two large barrages, 9 main head regulators, 3 scape channels, 4 pump houses and pump canals, 50 major drainage crossings.
The Saryu Canal Project has been prepared at a cost of Rs.9802 crore.
A total of 6,590 km length of canals through Saryu Main Canal, Rapti Main Canal and Gola Pump Canal, Dumariaganj Pump Canal, Ayodhya Pump Canal, Utraula Pump Canal are being laid to benefit the farmers from the project.
